The brief was to design a range of four t-shirts for the Autumn/Winter collection of Hero & Cape, a hand-illustrated, screen-printed clothing company. The client wanted a more masculine feel than their current range and the only limitation was that the designs had to be hand-drawn and to use the name of the company as a starting point. I researched not just modern comic mythology but also classic mythology.
I am a big fan of the original Clash of the Titans so I decided to base a design around the story of the Medusa, which is well known in popular culture and is an interesting visual.
The Medusa's gaze is so dangerous that it can turn you to stone, so I focused on the head. I created the snakes, which was a challenge to interlace them but keep the rough handmade feel required and the next stage was to get the pouty look I wanted and hypnotic eyes. The final element was to hand render the line "if looks could kill", a play on the saying and the fact that Medusa could turn you to stone with a look.
When it came to the printing I kept the majority of the illustration black because of the detail of the scales, only using colour on the eyes and the words.
