Concept / illustration / Design / Screen Print
This screen printed illustration was part of "The Monomyth" installation which took place @SEVEN at Brixton The illustrations depicted the archetypal character based on the work of Joseph Campbell and his concept of the 'monomyth', which has served as a cultural framework for countless contemporary stories.
As I was trying to show the archetypal image of a villain, I instantly thought of the classic Victorian gentleman with a tall, black top hat. I gave him the quintessential curled moustache, synonymous with cartoon villains and a sign of vanity. A single monocle shows him seeing things one way and I also gave him a toothy grin, which in the animal kingdom is seen as a threat of violence.
I made him totally black and shadowy because through research I found out that the "black hats" or "baddies" in early TV wore black as greater contrast with the hero was needed, because of poor picture quality.
