The brief was to design a range of four t-shirts for the Autumn/Winter collection of Hero & Cape, a hand-illustrated, screen-printed clothing company. The client wanted a more masculine feel than their current range and the only limitation was that the designs had to be hand-drawn and to use the name of the company as a starting point. I researched not just modern comic mythology but also classic mythology.
This design was based around make believe play. Instead of modern super heroes and mythical characters I used the idea of imagination as the visual: the simple method of a child turning his finger into a laser gun.
I took photographs of hands in the desired position then transferred them into a simple line drawing but keeping the shape and depths. The second part was the sound made when playing; I represented this with expressive hand written "zaps" which I cut out and placed so they locked together.
For printing I kept this simple and used black, only bringing in colour for the finger nails.
